and performance character traits via a Google survey.

One of our mindset quotes this week:

 I Love Mondays.

 1. a fresh start
 2. the chance to set a new tone for the rest of  the week.
 3. a great day to be alive.

In Reading workshop, students continued to read nonfiction text.  Here is how we incorporated the Expeditionary Learning (EL) Boxing protocol into reading and science.  The student's target is: I will learn important facts about sea lampreys.

1. Students write what they know
about sea lampreys
in the center box (rectangle.)

2. Students watch a three minute
video about sea lampreys and add
new information on the outside
of the "box."

3.  Students jigsaw (each one reads
part of an article) about sea lampreys.
They shared one or two facts with
their group.

4. Students add facts they learned
to the outer corners.  They also
compared what they know now to
what they knew in the beginning.

5. Students learned looked at pictures of different types of
barriers that prevent more sea lampreys from entering
the Great Lakes.  They also played Beat the Barrier game.
Next Tuesday, Mark Newman, will visit to talk about
invasive species.

In Writing Workshop, students continued to write a personal narrative story and peer edit.

Maya, Zhi and Nadia use IXL.
Students also practiced identifying different types of sentences (i.e. commands, explanations, etc.) and fragments, complete sentences, nouns and predicates using IXL.

Julia tries the mechanical machine
at the book fair.
Our Crew also enjoyed the wonderful book fair!  Thank you to all of the parents that helped with this, including Ms. Mueller, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Talley and Mrs. Wiseman!

Andrina, Paul and Kaiden use
crackers to learn about perimeter
and area.
In Mrs. Malloy's math class, students learn about alternative symbols for multiplication and division and continue work on facts. Students are starting to review for their assessment next week.

Andrina, Tristan and Piper work collaboratively
 to categorize metric measurements.

Matthew measures objects that
are about 1 decimeter long.

Special Notes and Friendly Reminders for Parents

1.  Thursday bags are due by Monday (or the first day of the week.)

2.  Please turn in the Reading Log (totaled) by Monday, Dec. 7th.  If your child misplaces his/her reading log, s/he can write the information on a piece of paper.

3.  Important Math Fact information:  Students should either complete a fact packet or Xtramath 3 times this week (due Monday.)

4.  Junior Art Docents (Rookies):The Rookies had a wonderful trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum!  We discussed what it means to become a Junior Art Docent.  There was a note about it and a permission slip if your child would like to continue (due 12/18.)   If your child isn't interested, you do not need to turn in the permission slip.

5.  Buddy games:  Our K-4 buddies are visiting our room next Wed. Your child is welcome to bring a game from home to play with his/her kindergarten buddy.

6.  Winter wear:  Please make sure to label hats, gloves, boots and especially snow pants with your child's name on them.  This will help us return to your child if they're misplaced. Please also send an extra pair of shoes for your child to change into at school, as boots stay in our coatroom, or s/he can wear his/her phy. ed. shoes.
