norms for their group.
This is a short and sweet blog-only two days!

In Math in both Mrs. Malloy's and Ms. Sakai's math class, students participated in fun math related activities or games.

In Reading Workshop, students started to write their expectations down, read with a partner and wrote how their expectations changed.

Our K-4 buddies followed a clue to our
room to look for the next clue
which Matthew read.
They are looking for their
gingerbread person!
In Science, students formed groups by balancing the boat (at least one Rookie and one Vet and at least one boy or one girl) to work on Wanted Invasive Species posters.

they see on the paper. Please ask
your child about this.

Nadia, Noah, Piper and Liam
brainstorm for ideas to
create a Gratitude precept.
Liam and Nadia use square foot tiles
to see how many fit on a square yard.

various sentence structures and
parts of speech, along with Edutyping.
In Writing Workshop, students have worked on writing Publishing Center stories and brainstorming for phrases to write on a get well card.

Mr. Hamann, Mrs. Cryns, Mrs.
Malloy, and I enjoyed lunch with
Mr. Newman after his presentations.
In Science, Mark Newman, author of the Sooper Yooper books visited our 3/4 and 4th grade crews!  He is an engaging, entertaining and educational speaker!  We all learned so much and his visit is sponsored by the Wege Foundation.  He showed a slide show, a short video clip, huge colorful posters, examples of specimens and he also autographed books.
Cole, Bennett and Parth make a
Get Well card for Anna Pendleton

in our garden plot.  The Vets have
seen the entire cycle of the growing
process and we all enjoyed healthy
treats earlier in the Fall. Julia and
Bennett also helped Mr. Rinka with
Mrs. Malloy's garden plot.  We also
shared our garden plot memories.
While Mrs. Cryn's and Mr. Hamann's crews were listening to Mr. Newman in our room, Mrs. Cryns offered our Crew a place to hang out. Our crew created "Get Well" cards for Mrs. Pendleton's daughter, Anna.

and performance character traits via a Google survey.

One of our mindset quotes this week:

 I Love Mondays.

 1. a fresh start
 2. the chance to set a new tone for the rest of  the week.
 3. a great day to be alive.

(Please click on any bold/brown caption for more pics.)

In Reading workshop, students continued to read nonfiction text.  Here is how we incorporated the Expeditionary Learning (EL) Boxing protocol into reading and science.  The student's target is: I will learn important facts about sea lampreys.

1. Students write what they know
about sea lampreys
in the center box (rectangle.)

2. Students watch a three minute
video about sea lampreys and add
new information on the outside
of the "box."

3.  Students jigsaw (each one reads
part of an article) about sea lampreys.
They shared one or two facts with
their group.

4. Students add facts they learned
to the outer corners.  They also
compared what they know now to
what they knew in the beginning.

5. Students learned looked at pictures of different types of
barriers that prevent more sea lampreys from entering
the Great Lakes.  They also played Beat the Barrier game.
Next Tuesday, Mark Newman, will visit to talk about
invasive species.

In Writing Workshop, students continued to write a personal narrative story and peer edit.

Maya, Zhi and Nadia use IXL.
Students also practiced identifying different types of sentences (i.e. commands, explanations, etc.) and fragments, complete sentences, nouns and predicates using IXL.

Julia tries the mechanical machine
at the book fair.
Our Crew also enjoyed the wonderful book fair!  Thank you to all of the parents that helped with this, including Ms. Mueller, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Talley and Mrs. Wiseman!

Andrina, Paul and Kaiden use
crackers to learn about perimeter
and area.
In Mrs. Malloy's math class, students learn about alternative symbols for multiplication and division and continue work on facts. Students are starting to review for their assessment next week.

Andrina, Tristan and Piper work collaboratively
 to categorize metric measurements.

Matthew measures objects that
are about 1 decimeter long.
