Blog #26

February 29- March 3, 2016

Parth, Eleanor, Liam, Maya, Lauryn, Rose, Nadia, Teddy
and Bennett received a voucher for a Milwaukee Buck's
basketball game for 100% Attendance in February!

"The Loco Lizards" aka: Maya, Lulu and Rose are the Atwater
4th Grade Battle of the Books Champions!  They will compete
in the regional competition later this month!

Mrs. Malloy's and Ms. Sakai's Rookies showing their ribbons
that they earned for creating amazing science fair posters!

Liam shares his quote during Crew
time.  Our Crew reviewed responsi-
bility norms for guest teachers.
March's Crew topic is empathy.
We watched a short video clip and

had thoughtful discussions about crew quotes.
We are also continuing to share
 "step ups and "shout outs."
Kaiden and Teddy lead our Crew in
an activity.

1. Kaiden and Eleanor use an EL protocol
called BBK (Building Background Knowledge)
starting with a Mystery text called
"Elm Farm Ollie Took to the Skies. "

2. Some of our Crew work on sequencing
8 steps about how milk starts with the cow
and eventually ends up at a store.

3.  Alice in Dairyland (Zoe) visited
to teach us about Wisconsin's resources
and dairy farming through a slide show,
short videos and a game.
4.  (We started the EL Boxing protocol
with brainstorming prior knowledge about
dairy farms in January and then the dairy
presentation was rescheduled.)
After steps 1 and 2, students filled in
the middle box, followed by the outer
box after the presentation while listening
to "Cow Tunes" by Brent Holmes.

Noah and Jesse work on a LeapYear
 fun pack.

Julia (leaping) participates in a Crew Leap year activity.

Rose and Tyndall lead us in a
Leap year brain break.

Mary Jane, Piper and Olivia work
on a Leap Day math challenge.

Jesse, Tyndall and Tristan research
a few Leap Year questions.

Claudia and Aiko analyze population
data in math.

Zhi, Mary Jane, Piper and Noah
practice reading a Dr. Seuss book for
fluency and expression. They will  read
their books to their K-4 buddies next week.
Our Crew also started to write
thank you notes to the Johnson
Controls volunteers and to Mr. Knight for
helping us with the"AWIM" unit.

Bennett, Cole, Liam, Aiko and Lauryn watch
for two Crew members to dance down the aisle during Rare Privilege'sACE ensemble. The two performers taught 100
people three different dances!  One of the performers, Maria Terres, is a former Atwater science teacher and a parent of a former student, Kristen. Maria shared with me that Kristen has her masters
.

Tristan reads about DNA from a
model at the Atwater Science Fair. Each
student also completed a scavenger hunt
about posters, an experiment or a model during
the fair.
Finn leads Mindfulness with
Tapping in.

Zhi shows us Kitty High Five
during a brain break!

Noah draws a brain during our Mind-
fulness lesson so Ms. Janet can teach us
about our brain.
