February 1-5, 2016

Congratulations to Matthew, Liam, Mary Jane and Nadia
for participating in the Third Grade Spelling Bee!  Nadia
earned 5th place in the 3rd Grade Bee!
Each Crew member is finding a quote or creating a precept
for Responsibility or Empathy.  Noah shared his quote
before we discuss it.

Finn illustrated his Publishing Center story before sharing
it with the class. He also answers questions and receives
compliments.  The PC books will be in a basket for our
Crew to read again and write compliments.

Bennett shares Osmo with our Crew!
He started teachingCrew members how to use it.

for differences and similarities between
fiction and nonfiction text while taking note
on a note catcher. Students also
switched groups to share more ideas.

Kaiden shared her math menu with
our math crew.  Ms. Sakai's class
reviewed and took an assessment,
Mrs. Malloy's class is working
on large number place value and
estimation.  Students also MAP
tested in math.

2.  Tristan, Cole, and Teddy read
a letter from the EarthToy Designs,Inc.
company describing their challenge
with specific requirements.
3.  Jesse, Matthew, Finn and Parth
build a chassis before adding on
wheels and axles.

5.  Bennett and Liam add on a jet
powered motor after adding wheels
and axles.
"A World of Motion" STEAM unit began this week! This meant that we held science and social studies every day with a very creative schedule!  Our Crew will take part in the Jet Toy Challenge.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on experiences, grapple, work cooperatively, problem solve and explore the  Engineering Design experience (set goals after being presented a challenge, build knowledge/research, design, construct and test, then present.) In Social Studies, students are learning about glaciers, moraines and kettles through researching.

4. Tyndall, Aiko, Piper, and Nadia
test their vehicle to see if it moves
straight and smooth. They also
recorded information about how
their vehicle moved.

6.  Eleanor, Kaiden, Rose and MaryJane
test their ballon powered motor. They also
recorded their vehicle's performance,
including what they might want to change.

7. Finn, Parth and Jesse complete a
Design Team Evaluation and create
questions to ask the Johnson
Controls volunteer next week.

Parth, Marie, Taylor and another 4th grader
