March 20-24, 2017

Congratulations to all of the "A World in Motion" teams that competed in the AWIM Competition as part of their case study! They should all be so proud of their hard work, perseverance and creativity! The teams in the pictures are advancing to the Regional "A World In Motion" competition on Saturday, April 8 from 2-3 pm in the SHS Arena. Mr. Sovol from Johnson Controls announced the teams. The other schools competing are Lake Bluff and a middle school. Please come to support our teams! Thank you to Johnson Controls for all of your work with our students this year and to Mr. Knight for helping with all of the communication!

Congratulations to The Winged Cheetahs who
won First Place for Distance.  A special
thank you to Mary Jane who helped Aiko.
Petra, Eliza and Daphne are also a part of the
team.

Congratulations to The Elderly Zombies for
winning first place for speed. Tristan and Owen
represented the team. Henry is also a part of
the team.

Geoffrey passed a XtraMath level-way to go!

Masha and Angela represented our crew at the PrinciPals meeting with Mrs. Russick about Reflection and Solitude. They took notes and also shared about the meeting. See pics.

Mrs. Russick ends our Community Crew with Mindfulness.See pics.

We had many discussions about reflection, solitude and mindset
this month. Here is the reading we used the week of the AWIM
competition.

Owen displays his science fair poster before he
shares it. Students also ask questions, give compli-
ments and two peer reviewers fill out a form for
him. After each poster is shared, we stand and
create an energizer that relates to each poster,
before changing rows where students are seating.
A shout out to all of the Rookies for their hard
work researching their question, creating their
poster and presenting it!
See pics.

Nadia and Aiko are enjoying the science fair posters and projects.  The Rookies went in the morning and filled out an information sheet. Both Rookies and Vets went in the afternoon. It was wonderful seeing so many families at the  science fair at night.
See pics.

Auguste, JP, Tristan and Owen enjoy the Milwaukee Symphony
Orchestra concert related to our ACE theme: architecture.
Thank you to Lora Caton for this photo and for chaperoning.
See pics.

Students answered a few questions about what they thought
they knew about autism, then each crew member received
a slip of paper and had to find the other crew members with
the same information. They read and discussed the information
with their group and shared it with our crew.
We reflected on the new information that we learned. We are
learning about autism because of the main character
in Mockingbird, the First Stage play, that we are seeing soon. See pics.

Owen, Henry and Tristan make final changes to their JetToy
before the competition. See pics.

Levi and Geoffrey prepare their JetToy during the "A World
in Motion" competition. See pics.

Masha, Kaiden and Levi are enjoying a snack courtesy
of Johnson Controls on competition day. See pics.

Mrs. Malloy's and Ms. Sakai's crew took the painter's tape
off the gym floor following the competition. Thank you
to Mr. Hamann for setting up the tape for the competition.

Angela and Auguste are completing a fun car activity pack
on competition day while listening to music from the Disney
Cars movie. See pics

Damian, Forrest, Cleo and Levi practice questions and using
the tools for the Forward Testing in April. We also reviewed
the answers to the questions. The Vets took the Science and
Social Studies parts. See pics.

Geoffrey, Forrest and Gauri are using fraction circles to find
parts of a fraction. See pics.

JP, Liam, Henry and Finn on a Brain Break. See pics.

Aiko, Nancy and Kaiden during Crazy Hair Day. See pics.

Henry, Jacoby and Henry eating lunch in the classroom
on science fair day. See pics.

Auguste, Finn and Levi enjoy a Medieval Times snack for our
spring party. Thank you to Owen D., JP, Kaiden, Aiko and
Tristan for bringing in treats. We enjoyed apples with honey
and cinnamon, baked pears with sugar and cinnamon,
bread (trenchers) with honey, a variety of cheeses, pudding
or jello, sparkling apple or white grape and apple juice.  There
was a tie into Medieval Times for each item and we ate in the
dark with "candles" while watching some of David McCauley's
"Castle" movie. The only utensils were toothpicks from Owen D.
and plastic knives. Then we went outside for recess. See pics.

Daphne and Liam read a Dining Around the
World Announcement for the morning
announcements. See pics.

Matthew, Cleo, Daphne and Mary Jane enjoy Dining Around
the World. Thank you to all of the families that came together
to enjoy each other's company and food. Thank you also to
Mrs. Trikha who worked so hard with me to put this event
together and to all of the people who helped (parents,
students, Mrs. Russick, Mr. Anton, Mr. Boyer, Ms. Noth and our night custodial crew, Emily Begel and Mary Kramer (for publicity), Mr. Stanco and Miya.) This is my last year helping with this event as I started to volunteer as a parent when Miya was in K-5 and now she's at  SIS.  It's bittersweet for sure.

Nancy at Dining Around the World. See pics.

Other events this week:

hanging up and taking down science fair posters. helping Mr. Hamann's crew peel the painter's tape from the floor (it's amazing how fast it is with 50 students helping out!), math assessment, discussed the buddy activity on April 10th (note in Thursday bag) about the Design Principle "Success and Failure", the crew also made one trip to the cafe to bring the Dining Around the World supplies down and one trip up the next day-it is safe to say that our week was jammed packed with so many wonderful activities!
