Our HarborChase trip was amazing! We visited the residents
to continue our relationship that we began last year.
It also fit into the EL Design Principle: Service and Compassion
but it was so wonderful for us, too!
Auguste and Tristan presented a HarborChase resident with a
card and smiled for a picture. See pics.

Eliza and Nadia read a book (that they practiced) to two
HarborChase residents. See pics.

After reading, Finn and Geoffrey talked with a HarborChase
resident. The crew was absolutely engaged in conversations with the residents and vice versa. After returning, we debriefed our trip and shared how wonderful our experience was for us.  We hope to return there every month!

The students enjoyed a delicious pizza snack
made in HarborChases's pizza oven. Thank
you to Donna Imme and her incredible staff.
Thank you to Mr. Christiansen, Mrs. De
Weerdt and Mrs. Rosenberg for chaperoning
the trip and helping out! See pics.

Owen and Levi brought a basket of Welcome
cards for new students to Mrs. Kristopeit
that our crew made with our buddies. This was
part of our Service and Compassion month.
Our crew has discussed that compassion
is empathy + lending a helping hand. I have
been so impressed with their acts of
compassion in class and on the playground.

For initiatives, we played People to People and Trio
Travel. See pics.

Forrest and Jacoby play a square multiplication game. The
math crew also practiced scaled graphs. See pics.

In science we started to explore the question, "How does form affect function?" with objects and short videos of cat paws, a sofa being made and tiny apartments with many configurations. Students took notes on a note catcher. This is the beginning of our A World in Motion (AWIM) case study.

Mae, Henry, Owen and William write traits/properties of
different science fair posters (i.e. color, text, 3-D effects,
pictures, resources.) The math crew then continued to rotate
through six posters from past years and discussed how we
could assess them. After their ideas, we tried a couple of
them, then they circled which traits they think are important
to assess. I will create a rubric using their ideas. Rookies
will bring home a science fair poster pack this week. See pics.

This is a ? is a fun brain break! Go Noodle and dancing were
also fun! See pics.

6Advanced Learning Dept. info:

Word Masters (if your child chose to participate)

The new lists are in manila envelopes. I thought it would be easier to keep them in those. Your child should also add the "word posters" from the previous challenge to the envelope as those words are used again. There is a new word study sheet this time and extras are available in the classroom. Your child will have some time to work on it in class and the rest should be completed at home. Envelopes should be kept in your child's binder. They also received a crossword puzzle.

The next competition in in Feb.    Online practice: www.quizlet.com. Most students tried this at school so they know how to log in.

7.  Winter Sing:  Thursday, Jan. 26th (Grade 3 and 3/4)-Dress Code: Dressy, Drop off no later than 7:30 pm in the music room, Performance:  7:45 pm

8.  Science Fair: new date is Thursday, March 23rd from 7:00-8:0 pm. Vets:  will not complete science fair projects. Our entire crew will participate in "A World of Motion" case study (like last year but more in depth and will include more reading and writing.)  Rookies:  will participate in the case study and will also complete science posters. Information will come home this coming week.  The science fair posters will be on display during the science fair.
